On May 10th, 1910, a plane piloted by Art Hartman, took off from a section of the Burlington Golf Club and became the first powered airplane to take off from Iowa soil. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of this historic event Burlington aviation enthusiasts and the Southeast Iowa Regional Airport Authority will host FLY IOWA 2010 on Friday, September 17th & Saturday, September 18th.
FLY IOWA is an annual statewide fly-in and aviation fair created by the Iowa Aviation Promotion Group. The event is designed to promote aviation and its associated benefits across the state of Iowa, and to use aviation as a motivating force to encourage science, math and technology education among Iowa's youth.
Burlington is honored to host FLY IOWA 2010. Saturdays’ activities take off with a fly-in pancake breakfast by the Kiwani's Club, military and civilian aircraft displays, helicopter rides, displays from non-profit organizations, educational groups and commercial vendors.The evening will be topped off with a BIG BAND DANCE and SHOW.
From the dreams of Art Hartman 100 years ago, to the dreams of Iowans today, aviation continues to impact the progress of Iowa. Aviation is much more than merely a means to an end; it is a critical component of economic growth by transporting people and goods quickly and efficiently. Aviation continues to captivate and enthrall people of all ages, as a result of this passion, dreams really do take flight and progress is made.
